Welcome to the cosmopolitan city

Container ships in Hamburg, in the port and on the Elbe are part of the cityscape of the Hanseatic city. Whether they sail through the middle of the city or lie on the quay walls. They are part of the port and the port is the city.

Meanwhile, these ships are up to 400 meters long. This makes the work of Hamburg's harbour pilots to park these giants all the more impressive. Because the port has not become bigger or wider. On the contrary. In many places, harbour basins are being filled in to put them to other uses.

So it's an incredible feat what these people accomplish day and night. A few times I was able to ride on a container ship until the giant was moored to the breakwater. My greatest respect goes to these perfectionists.
